Hooking up with his old boyhood chum was a last-gasp idea, but Vince Berardi needed money, and Feeno Bannon, the one-time-ne’er-do-well, had loads of it. As president of a bank full of Teamsters deposits, Bannon and his mobster buddies shelled out unpaid loans to Las Vegas casinos, fancy resorts and mob-owned restaurants.
So helping Berardi secure a Teamsters loan to build some houses in the New Jersey Pine Barrens would have been easy, until Bannon was snuffed out by the mob as an FBI informant helping to finger the murderers of former Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa. Bannon runs from both the mob and FBI, hiding under their noses in Atlantic City casinos, and when their search gets hot, he goes underground in the Pine Barrens.
From the Dead blends true crime — what happened to Hoffa? — with fictional characters based on true-life figures, set in New Jersey, Philadelphia and the Detroit area.

From the Dead edition by John Hilferty Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a fictionalized account of what (very likely) happened with the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. The author, a former reporter and editor for the Philadelphia Inquirer, presents a well researched account of the hows and whys of the organized crime world of the 1970s. Having spent time in the area the story takes place in I can assure readers that the region and it's inhabitants are exactly as Hilferty depicts them in his book.

The story follows the misfortune of Vince Berardi and his childhood friend Feeno as they find themselves unintentionally drawn into the world of mobsters and federal agents determined to convict them. The first half of the book is interesting as it delves into the corruption and characters of the crime syndicates of New Jersey and Philadelphia. Around the halfway mark the story really begins to pick up and the tension builds, culminating in a satisfying and exciting ending that is both clever and believable.

Criticisms are few: the cast of characters is sometimes hard to keep track of (there are numerous secondary agents, lawyers and mobsters that move in and out of the story) and there are a few typos that are jarring in an otherwise well-edited work. Overall, this is a well written indie novel that I was pleasantly surprised with. If you enjoyed HBO's The Sapranos you're certain to love this more realistic but equally captivating literary work on the same subject.

From the Dead edition by John Hilferty Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Very entertaining slant on the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. Believable character studies of Mob types and bystanders who run afoul of Mob types. Descriptions of the Pine Barrens and surrounding parts of New Jersey are especially accurate and gritty. Very easy to read and well written.
Enjoyed "From the Dead" that we purchased from . A blend of fact and fiction that reveals unusual aspects of the Jimmy Hoffa disappearance. The characters portrayed in the novel are quite interesting. Stan especially liked the description of the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

The twisted mystery about Jimmy Hoffa's demise has never been solved - and might never be. But John Hilferty's novel, From the Dead, offers theory that certainly deserves consideration. But more important about this thriller is Hilferty's exciting and readable trip through the wilds of New Jersey's Pinelands that is so intriguing. His fictional characters, mingled with some Mafia notables, are so cleverly intertwined that the reader will envision this as a true chapter in that era's murderous history. The former Philadelphia Inquirer reporter's writing style is far superior to the normal prose in your daily newspaper. If you are a regular traveler on the Atlantic City
Expressway this tale will clarify what lurks behind that scrubby vegetation bordering the highway. It's too bad Hilferty waited till his retirement years to fully release his impressive talents.

Having grown up in a suburb of Philly the story brings back memories of places and times. John writes a very readable book that holds your interest and you buy into the main characters wanting to know how the fare in the end. Well written and very well worth the time. Growing up I knew about the mob, but this paints a picture of how deeply they we ingrained into Unions and drugs. I hope John has another book like this that he's working on.
